Flag Making Workshops
Ribbons of Unity
Free flag, bunting and banner making workshops with Oxford Community Artists.
Fusion Arts, in association with the Cowley Road Carnival, is launching a creative community arts project in celebration of 2 key national events this summer – the Queens Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympic Games. Local people of all ages will help create flags, banners and bunting, reflecting the vast diversity of nationalities from both the Commonwealth and those participating in the Olympics, to make a colourful display to greet the Olympic Torch Relay when it passes through East Oxford in July.
The flags, bunting and banners created will then become a community resource to be used for any future events like Carnival, Mela, festivals and other celebrations in the area.
The free creative workshops will begin on the Diamond Jubilee weekend with a drop in flag making session at SS Mary John’s Street party on June 3rd and continuing throughout June at celebrations and events like the Oxford Mela on June 9th.
Schools, community groups and creative individuals are invited to contribute, with the help of professional artists to learn simple cold wax dying techniques, and design a flag incorporating emblems from the countries represented in our community.
Drop in sessions for anyone who wants to come and make, will take place at Fusion on the above dates.
‘Flags – Ribbons of Unity’ is mostly funded by Awards for All but more sponsors are needed to help us reach the target creation of 60 flags, 100s of bunting triangles and 3 large banners representing Friendship, Unity and Peace as symbolized by the Olympic Flame. If your organization can help support this in any way, please contact us and help create a positive Olympian Legacy to be enjoyed by all the community in future celebrations.
Thank You!
