Fusion Arts is one of the over 90 arts organisations and artists that are working to take climate action as part of the Green Arts Oxfordshire Network. As a member of the network, we have pledged to collectively work towards climate action and a zero-carbon future and meet the goals of the Green Arts Charter.

Here's what we are currently doing and aim to do in response to the charter:

  • We will continue to support, platform, and collaborate on work with other environmentally active organisations and artists. For instance our meanwhile use work allows us to activate usually empty spaces across Oxford with environmentally-minded activities and events for communal good.
  • In our work, we strive to amplify voices that are marginalised. This is important in relation to climate justice, as we live in a world where certain groups are disproportionately affected by the climate crisis. This can be seen in our partnership with the Oxford Windrush Group for instance, whom we support, promote and collaborate with to amplify Global Majority stories and experiences.
  • We will continue to implement a fundamental shift in the way we plan and carry out projects so that climate action and climate justice are central points of focus. One example of this is in our Artist Research Labs programme, which brings diverse groups of artists together to collectively explore, converse, research and share resources around making their practices more sustainable.
  • We aspire to source, transport and dispose of the materials we use locally and sustainably. For example the DIY lantern kits we sell during Oxford's Light Festival are fully compostable apart from the LED light (which can be reused). When sourcing lantern materials we chose eco tape, willow from sustainable supplier Musgrave Willows, stickers that are recycled and plastic free, instructions riso printed by Oxford GreenPrint. The kits were delivered by bike couriers Pedal & Post.
  • We source any wood & building supplies from RAW Workshop and reuse, repurpose or recycle materials. We share & lend materials to others including a PA system regularly used by community groups, and we often borrow ladders from Arts at the Old Fire Station when working in our central Oxford meanwhile use spaces.
  • We intend to start benchmarking our carbon cost as an organisation and for individual projects and events that we put on.
  • Part of our staff force have attended carbon literacy training and our goal is to get all staff carbon literacy trained this year.
  • We work with practitioner John A. Blythe to provide a range of eco-friendly darkroom workshops for the public that teach non-toxic photography developer alternatives and approaches.
  • We are taking action within our team to reduce our carbon footprint where possible, which includes walking or cycling to work and reducing and eliminating our consumption of animal products.
  • In our building we programme our heating on a timer so that it is only used when really needed. We recycle, repurpose or donate materials as much as possible.
  • We are also making sure that future building plans for the Fusion Arts Centre are low carbon impact and we aim to implement carbon literacy training as part of our induction programme for any new member of staff.

Yes! We often accept physical donations of items that can be used in future projects and / or lent to partner organisations and community groups. Please get in touch letting us know what item(s) you would like to donate and we will get back to you soon.
