Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund ‘I, Cowley’ is a creative heritage project run by Fusion Arts in partnership with the Ark T Centre, Oxfordshire History Services and the Museum of Oxford. It’s aim is to create a contemporary archive of images and stories about the Cowley area of Oxford over the past 100 years with contributions from the people of Cowley themselves.
A dedicated website has been created to capture the new archive, to which people may access and contribute to throughout the project. Access the I,Cowley website here.
Highlights of the work include 2 shop residencies at the Templars Square Shopping Centre, school residencies at Our Lady’s and Church Cowley Primary schools, the creation of Oral History accounts on film and in audio recordings, a collection of over 60 photographic portraits of Cowley residents with an object that holds special meaning to them and a massive outdoor projection screening onto the side of the Hockmore Tower Flats featuring archive and newly created archive photographs of the area and people.
A DVD of the project has been developed as a resource and interactive stimulus for future engagement with the area and its heritage, featuring 10 oral histories, vox-pops, and photographic portraits of Cowley residents. This will be distributed across city libraries (Westgate, Temple Cowley and Blackbird Leys), and the Oxfordshire History Centre at the end of the project.
