In 2003, writer-in-residence Julia Hollander spent three months working with detainees at the Campsfield immigration detention centre near Kidlington.
Journey through Campsfield
Working with the detainees, the residency provided the opportunity of participatory creative endeavour for the participants, and allowed participants to explore the creative process and encourage their active participation. Through various creative activities and exercises, participants developed their skills through expressive writing, oral communication and IT use. Participants were given the opportunity to express their life experiences and perspective, boosting sense of self-value and confidence. Such creative activities promoted greater understanding between the centre, the detainees, and the wider community.
The residency culminated in the production of a small booklet including the detainees’ writings, accompanied by black and white photographs. It was launched with a video screening and readings from ex-detainees to an invited audience of interested parties.
