Writer in residence Julia Hollander spent 3 months working with detainees at the Campsfield immigration detention centre near Kidlington.
Journey through Campsfield
The aims of the residency were:
-To provide the opportunity of participatory creative endeavour for the detainees
-To allow the participants to explore the creative process and encourage their active participation
-To help develop the skills of the participants through expressive writing, oral communication and IT use.
-To enable participants to express their life experience and perspective.
-To promote greater understanding between the centre, the detainees and the wider community.
The outcomes of the residency included a small booklet of the detainees’ writings in it, accompanied by black and withe photographs. It was launched with a video screening and readings from ex-detainees to an invited audience of interested parties.
