Word Up! was a creative music project funded by Youth Music, devised by Fusion Arts and Steve Larkin from Hammer and Tongue, in partnership with Starlight Enterprise in Blackbird Leys. Young people aged 14-18 were given the chance to bring their lyrical talent to the fore with guidance from acclaimed poet and international slam champion Steve Larkin, as well as being offered the opportunity to earn an Open College Network accreditation. During this programme of four courses across Oxfordshire, young participants were given training opportunities to work on their performances, develop creative skills, and their set-up as performers and/or educators.
“To be honest, all of it was good!” said a participant from the first half of the series.
The programme ran successfully in Oxford and in Witney, and participants carried out acclaimed performances at Cowley Road Carnival, The Jam Factory, Catweazle Club, Base 33 Youth Club and Fat Lil’s.
This project was funded by Youth Music, V-Involved, West Oxfordshire and South Oxfordshire District Councils.
