Word Up is a creative music project funded by Youth Music, devised between Fusion Arts and Steve Larkin, from Hammer and Tongue, and in partnership with Starlight Enterprise in Blackbird Leys. Young people aged 14-18 (and up to 25 if SEN) are given the chance to bring their lyrical talent to the fore with guidance from acclaimed poet and international slam champion Steve Larkin, as well as being offered the opportunity to earn an Open College Network accreditation. During this programme of 4 courses across Oxfordshire, young participants are working on their lyrics, their performances and their set-up as performers and/or educators through training opportunities.
The programme, now halfway through, has successfully run in Oxford and in Witney (with partners Base 33), with acclaimed performances at Cowley Road Carnival, The Jam Factory, Catweazle Club, Base 33 Youth Club and Fat Lil’s.
The second half of the project will be launched with the Advanced Course at Fusion Arts on Friday 16th September: call us on 01865 245 735 to book a place! The participants will further their lyrical and performing skills and catalogues, with a special focus on how to get gigs!
“To be honest, all of it was good!” – participant from first half series
This project is funded by Youth Music, V-Involved, West Oxfordshire and South Oxfordshire District Councils.
